Cathy Segal-Garcia is a “musician’s vocalist”. Her repertoire covers classic jazz standards, her own original compositions, and jazz instrumentalists’ compositions.

“In Control: Jazz singer Cathy Segal-Garcia’s style leans toward heavily melodic vehicles that show off her flowing, at-ease, rhythmic sense...A voice that’s soft and warm as cashmere.” Zan Stewart, Los Angeles Times

Originally from Boston, attending Berklee College of Music in the early 70s, she moved to San Francisco, and to L.A. in 1976, where she still lives today. Cathy has toured around the planet, recorded on many projects including seven of her own, and is well respected as an educator, composer, producer, and an entrepreneur who is well known and admired for carrying the torch for jazz in LA!

Here for a rare performance in the Bay Area, she will also be delivering a workshop on scatting at the Jazz School in Berkeley on Sunday, March 11th. http://www.cathysegalgarcia.com/

“The true spirit is there. Secret Life finds the singer at her best, doing what she has done successfully for years, telling a story through song, intimately, as if she were standing next to you, sharing a moment of warm sunshine together.” - Jim Santella, L.A. Jazz Scene

Joining her for The Art of The Duo will be Michael Coleman on piano. Michael grew up in Brooklyn, NY and studied jazz piano with Barry Harris, Michael Weiss, Dan Wall, David Berkman as well as with Bay Area classical teacher Judith Meites.. After earning a BA from Oberlin College, Michael relocated to Oakland to pursue a career in music. He has toured both Europe and the US with several bands including Miles Kurosky, Jug Free America, Beep! and the Attachments and has spent time in India studying tabla.

He performs in the Bay Area several nights a week with a variety of groups ranging from power pop to free jazz, playing piano, organ, synths and clarinet. His trio, Beep!, has released two albums and a third one is due out this summer on Third Culture Records.

“Pianist Coleman brings a distinct style and sensibility to everything he plays..” Brian McCoy, The Examiner
