1909 Steinway Model A

This beautiful piano was in the same San Francisco family from 1909 until we acquired it earlier this year. Steinway & Sons records indicate the piano was completed in the New York factory and shipped to San Francisco on September 2, 1909. Its original owner was George Applegarth, the renowned architect of San Francisco's Palace of the Legion of Honor and the famed Spreckles Mansion on Washington St., the largest home in the City. In 1916 Mr. Applegarth designed and built his own home as wedding gift to his wife - an elegant house on Vallejo St. in Pacific Heights overlooking the Golden Gate. The piano stood in the coffered-ceilinged living room for the next 94 years - George Applegarth died at age 96 in 1972 and the home and the piano passed to his children and then his grandchildren. The family finally sold the home this year and the piano has come to us. The piano was refinished many years ago and the figured mahogany case with rare "tulip" legs has some fading as it was in a west facing window. Internally the piano is all original and in very good condition with the soundboard in excellent shape and beautiful original ivory keys. The tone is exceptional and this piano is ready to go to the next owner for its second hundred years. Size 6ft. 2in. Serial number 136048.
