JAZZ PIANIST LARRY VUCKOVICH SOLO CONCERT: BEYOND CATEGORY

Critics and fellow musicians recognize Larry Vuckovich as one of the most dynamic and versatile of jazz pianists and composers, his music covering the history of jazz piano styles from the early period to the present. He has gained national and international respect performing with masters from various jazz influences, including Red Norvo, Cab Calloway, Buddy Tate, Arnett Cobb, “Cleanhead” Vinson, Brew Moore, John Handy, Mel Torme, Jon Hendricks, Philly Joe Jones, Dexter Gordon, Elvin Jones, Charles McPherson, Tom Harrell, Bobby Hutcherson, and Charlie Haden, among others. Piano jazz legend Barry Harris has called Larry Vuckovich "one of the premier West Coast pianists". Larry is both an acclaimed solo concert pianist - having performed at the Fazioli piano series in New York, Chicago and San Francisco - as well as a leader of an 18-piece big band that has performed at the Filoli summer jazz series, and COPIA in Napa as well as other venues.

His teaching and clinical projects have featured a solo piano History of Jazz Piano, ranging from Jelly Roll Morton, Fatha Hines, Teddy Wilson, and Bud Powell, to Bill Evans, Mc Coy Tyner, Chick Corea and various free jazz styles. He is also known for his love of film noir and has included pieces from this genre in his recent recordings, which won the praise of acclaimed film critic Leonard Maltin. Jazz Times wrote that “Larry Vuckovich is the most poetic interpreter of film noir.” Larry was the first jazz musician to discover and record Bronislaw Kaper’s obscure, haunting theme from High Wall. His two latest recordings, High Wall: Real Life Film Noir and Street Scene, on his own Tetrachord Music label, placed in the Top 10 of the JazzWeek national radio reporting charts, and are heard regularly on XM Satellite Radio.

Larry led the house trio at San Francisco’s famed Keystone Korner for five years before leaving for the exciting New York jazz scene of the ‘80s, appearing at the Village Vanguard, Blue Note, and Bradley’s, with premier East Coast musicians Billy Higgins, Cecil Payne, Al Cohn, Curtis Fuller, Milt Hinton, and Mel Lewis among others, receiving top critical reviews. The New York Times notes that his unique outlook and collection of influences set him apart from most pianists who are heard regularly in New York. The Village Voice says he has a book of piano gems that will keep you guessing. The Toronto Globe and Mail calls him a musician who sits apart from the rest by virtue of his taste for the exotic and the exquisite. Larry presents a wide-ranging program of swing, bebop/post-bop, contemporary jazz, blues-funk, Afro-Cuban, salsa and Brazilian music.

Gary Giddins in The Village Voice named Blue Balkan: Then & Now, a reissue with added material of Larry’s pioneering 1980 jazz/world music recording, one of the top CDs of 2002. Larry returned to New York recently with his Jazz-Latin Trio/Quartet to perform at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in New York. While there, he performed with Marian McPartland on her Piano Jazz show, heard on NPR national and global outlets. His other recent performances include tours with the Legends of Jazz, featuring Hadley Caliman, Curtis Fuller, Julian Priester, John Heard, Jeff Chambers, and Eddie Marshall. Larry, who worked with Dexter Gordon, collaborated recently with the Napa Valley Jazz Society to present a tribute to Dexter Gordon in a two tenor front line quintet format. He has appeared locally at Yoshi’s, the Douglas Beach House, Palo Alto Jazz Alliance, the former Jazz at Pearls, and other prestigious Bay Area venues, as well as festivals, concert halls and clubs in Europe
