The Blues - A Performance Ensemble
B.B. King sang, “Every day I have the Blues” and we couldn’t
agree more. It’s time to play the Blues. In this ensemble, we’ll
explore the Blues from its humble beginnings to its thriving state today.
We’ll become acquainted with musicians, songs and song forms.
With instruments in hand, we’ll jump right into the what, where
and when of the music focusing on the backbeat, rhythm section, soloing,
dynamics, how to function collectively in a band and band leading. This
ensemble will culminate with a live performance. Instruments may include
guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, woodwinds, brass, harp and vocals.Blues
Guitar Class - Covering the Elements of Blues Guitar Playing.

learn about song forms, improvisation, strumming and picking techniques,
rhythmic development, chords, tabs as well as proper care and maintenance
of the guitar. An overview of Blues guitarists from early days through
today will also be included. The class will culminate with a live performance.
Rock Band Workshop - A Performance Ensemble
While it’s important to study privately, this program helps round
out a musician’s skills by focusing on the elements necessary
to play in an ensemble. In this hands-on class, material will be chosen
and participants will learn the ins and outs of ensemble playing. Topics
will include rhythmic section playing, parts playing, soloing, strengthening
listening skills, lead and background vocals, memorization of songs
and proper rehearsing skills. The class will culminate with a live performance.
Ukulele Class –
Small, portable, great to take to school or work, this unique program’s
more fun than a day at the balmy beach! One only needs to listen to
Jake Shimabukuro’s brilliant “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”
or Israel Kamakawiwo'ole’s delicate medley of “Somewhere
Over the Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” to hear that the ukulele
most certainly has its place in today’s eclectic and vibrant music
scene. This class will focus on the basics though material learned will
easily allow participants to cover almost any musical style. The class
will culminate with a live performance.
Guitar
groups will be held at both Oakland locations on evenings and weekends.
