For over 15 years, Tango No. 9 has been exploring the breadth and depth of tango, from the classic sounds of the early dance standards through Astor Piazzolla's revolutionary tango nuevo all the way up to tango-inspired chamber works that were composed especially for the group. Tonight they will be presenting a mix of new additions to their repertoire as well as old favorites.

Tango No. 9 is an all-star Bay Area ensemble (members have played with The Residents, Tom Waits, Club Foot Orchestra, Extra Action Marching Band...) united in a love for tango. Since 1998, the group has delved deeply into the world of tango, playing countless concerts and milongas, collaborating with many of the top dancers on the west coast, and recording four critically acclaimed albums. Joining the calendar for their premier performance at Piedmont Piano, look for an evening of cutting edge tango across the spectrum, served up with love and passion, Tango No. 9 style. With its unique instrumentation of violin, trombone, piano, and accordion/bandoneon, Tango No. 9 embraces both a reverence to tango’s seductive past and an innovative vision of the music’s storied future.

The quartet is Joshua Raoul Brody on piano, Zoltan DiBartolo on vocals, Greg Stephens on trombone and Catharine Clune on violin.

“French cigarette smoke from the heart of a dark Paris café comes pouring out of this album ... the lonely sensuality of a bandoneon ... the sexy slur of a trombone ... the heartbreaking sigh of a violin and the therapeutic chords of a piano. If this quartet had a vocalist, she would have a whiskey voice and an angel’s body.” — Tuscon Citizen

“La dolce vita, Indeed!” — Adam Savetsky, San Francisco Bay Guardian

“As soon as we got settled, the music grabbed us by the emotional necktie and pushed us up against a sonic wall. Abandoning all desire for chat, we gave ourselves over to the music...” — Hiya Swanhuyser, SF Weekly

“Tango No. 9 has released a dazzling debut album. Perhaps the most passionate debut I’ve ever heard. And passion is what Tango is all about. ...every track on the disc breathes emotion... Tango with a hint of jazz.” — Franklin E. Wales, Rag Magazine
