Peter Apfelbaum / Josh Jones Duo

Longtime musical associates Peter Apfelbaum (piano, saxophone) and Josh Jones (drums, percussion) return to the piano store for their first concert since 2019! In their largely improvised performances, Apfelbaum's expansive, polyrhythmic approach to the piano combines with Jones's mastery of Afro-Cuban rhythms. Celebrating 43 years of performing together, they will also be playing material from their shared partnership in Apfelbaum's Hieroglyphics Ensemble and Don Cherry's Multikulti.

An influential figure in new jazz for over three decades, Grammy winner Peter Apfelbaum is best known as leader of the genre-mashing world music big band Hieroglyphics and the electronica/vocal-driven sextet Sparkler. He has also collaborated with some of the leading figures in contemporary music, including the late Don Cherry (whose group Multikulti he was Musical Director of from 1989-1995, and which Jones was also a member of), Cecil Taylor, Harry Belafonte, Omar Sosa, Bill Laswell, Jai Uttal and Trey Anastasio, among others. He has written for the Kronos Quartet, the National Swedish Radio Orchestra and Kamikaze Ground Crew. In addition to his own projects, he has also often returned to the Bay Area over the years in the various bands led by NY-based, Berkeley-bred trumpeter Steven Bernstein and Cuban-born drummer/composer Dafnis Prieto. CMJ New Music Report has called Apfelbaum "A visionary, galvanic composer and player like few others of his time." peterapfelbaum.net

Josh Jones has been a Bay Area fixture since the 1970's and a longstanding member of Apfelbaum's various groups. In addition to leading the Josh Jones Latin Jazz Ensemble, he has worked with artists as diverse as Steve Coleman, David Murray, Chico Freeman, Yosvany Terry, Jacqui Naylor and Los Munequitos de Matanzas. He has long been a much-respected educator, in recent years leading the student-based Josh Jones Salsa Big Band.
